Is Your Workplace Compliant with the AED Legislation?

From 1 January 2026, many business premises and prescribed vehicles in South Australian must have installed, registered and properly maintained AEDs.

Aero Healthcare helps South Australian organisations design coverage, supply compliant devices and set up monitoring so they can meet the AED legislation requirements with confidence. We’re offering a no obligation, free consultation to help your organisation understand the requirements.

Smart AED’s Could Save Your Organisation Thousands

Owners must maintain AEDs in line with the legislation and the manufacturer’s instructions, and failure to do so can attract penalties up to $20,000 for designated and prescribed buildings. Aero Healthcare make it easy for building owners to comply with these regulations with a range of advanced AEDs.

For portfolios with multiple AEDs or remote locations, remote electronic monitoring reduces the chance that a device is flat, missing or out of date without anyone noticing.

CardiAct Connect Monitored Cabinets

CardiAct Connect monitored cabinets, which provide real-time alerts if a cabinet is opened, an AED is removed, temperatures go out of range, or consumables approach expiry, using 4G or Wi-Fi to feed data to an online portal with email and SMS notifications

This combination means AED managers can see the status of their fleet at a glance, act on faults quickly, and keep evidence of compliance activity.

What You Need To Know About
The Mandate

If you own or manage a non-Crown building in South Australia, the AED legislation South Australia sets clear rules from 1 January 2026. The Act requires certain buildings, facilities and vehicles to install, maintain, signpost and register Automated External Defibrillators.

From that date, designated buildings and prescribed commercial buildings must:

Have at least one compliant AED on site
icon-bullet.png
Scale up to 1 AED per 1,200 m² of publicly accessible floor area for larger commercial premises
(schools follow a separate rule)
icon-bullet.png
Keep the AED maintained and tested at least annually

Display clear internal and external signage

Register the device on the South Australian AED Register

See SA Health’s requirements for public buildings and facilities for more detail. Failing to install or maintain AEDs as required can lead to penalties up to $20,000 for the building owner. These requirements are set out in SA Health’s AED Best Practice Guide. The full legal wording pdf is available here.

AED Monitoring and Accessibility Requirements

Complying with AED legislation South Australia means your AED has to be easy to find, ready to work, and recorded on the state register.

AED Placement and Public Access

Under the Automated External Defibrillators (Public Access) Act 2022, owners of designated buildings, facilities and prescribed commercial buildings must install:

Clearly Visible

Put the AED in a visible, central spot. Entrances, receptions, lift lobbies and main walkways are typical locations that SA Health highlights as suitable for public access and quick response.

Fixed Location

Treat the location as fixed. The Act expects AEDs installed under the law to stay in a clearly identified place. If an AED is moved to a new permanent spot, the owner needs to update both the signage and the register entry so people and Triple Zero (000) can still find it.

Opening Hour Access

Match access to your opening hours. If a facility isn’t open 24/7, you still need an AED if you’re caught by the Act. When you register the device, you record the times it’s available so call-takers know when the public can reach it.

For large, multi-level sites, the SA Health best practice material encourages owners to think about walking distance and obstacles in order to reach the AED and get back to a patient in a matter of minutes.

Aero Healthcare Signage

The Act requires clear signage so people know an AED is nearby. At a minimum, owners must display:

AED Sign

A sign at or near the AED
Rectangle-59.png

Entrance Signage

A sign outside, near an entrance, showing there’s an AED inside the building

Aero Healthcare can supply defibrillator cabinets and signage that align with the Act expectations.

The Act requires clear signage so people know an AED is nearby. SA Health provides downloadable A3 posters and print-ready files for internal and external AED signs, which many organisations use as their default package across sites.

For AEDs in vehicles, SA Health’s best practice guide and industry summaries explain that external signage on the vehicle is needed so passengers and bystanders can see there’s an AED on board.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I Need An AED Under The South Australian Legislation?
Yes, if you own or manage a non-Crown building, facility or prescribed vehicle in South Australia and the space is open to the public. Commercial buildings from 600 m², schools, sporting facilities, aged care, retirement villages and public venues need installed, registered AEDs.
How Many AEDs Does My Site Need?
Most commercial sites need at least one AED once they reach 600 m² of publicly accessible floor area. Larger or complex sites like shopping centres or campuses often need several units so people can reach an AED and return to a patient quickly.
Do AEDs Need Monitoring And Maintenance?
Yes. The law expects AEDs to be in working order, with in-date batteries and pads, and ready to use. That means regular checks, clear records and fast action if there’s a fault. Aero’s monitored cabinets and connected AEDs keep an eye on status so you know when something needs attention.
